Meridian Council for the Arts
Arts Educational Outreach
The Meridian Council for the Arts also works within an extensive network of Arts Partners in reaching the youngest of those whose lives can be touched through the arts. MCA provides grants to local educators and helps promote these special arts projects throughout the community.
Meridian Museum of Art recently began holding art classes for budding artists. Each 12-week session builds skills in drawing, painting and multi-media. Classes are kept small – 10 students per session — and inexpensive — $25 per week, which includes all supplies.
In an exciting new partnership with the MSU Riley Center, the MCA sponsored a Community Youth Arts Competition, including literary arts (or book review) competition and a visual arts competition in conjunction with the theatrical presentation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
In addition, the MCA makes children’s hands-on experience a cornerstone of its biggest event of the year — the Threefoot Festival, a fine arts festival held in the historic arts district of downtown Meridian. This free arts extravaganza gives children of all ages the opportunity to experience a wide variety of arts first-hand – pottery, watercolors, painting, crafts, storytelling and more! The area is staffed by not only MCA volunteers, but also artists from across the community sharing their skills, talent and passion for the arts.
